Bow-Re-Mi

Bow's are always something that are going to be found in fashion. One thing you will notice is this simple little piece is re-worked and re-invented every season- From petite, decorative bows to oversized, extravagant bows- it seems the world has gone bow crazy and it doesn't look like it is going to stop any time soon.

My favourite take on the fashion accessory is the oversized headband. There are so many amazing looks to achieve with this one simple item. I think that's the reason the bow has, and will remain so popular- the simplicity of the shape, which means you can play with embellishing and using different fabrics to create something much more interesting.

As much as I love the headband look- it's not something I can see myself wearing on an everyday basis. I knitted this bow using some vintage fabric mixed with some white wool and attached it to a plain belt to give a simple outfit a cute pop.

In my humble opinion- The bigger the better!

The Ginger One

On June 5th, Nicola Roberts (of Girls Aloud fame) will be releasing her first solo single 'Beat of My Drum'. I was quite excited about this as the hype surrounding the first release, and the fact she collaborated with Diplo and Dimitri Tikiovoi on the track made me believe we might have a chart topper on our hands. Unfortunately after hearing the full song, I can safely say, well...it's crap! The only good thing about it are these awesome images from a promo shoot, which, I believe were taken by Henry Holland (who uses Miss Roberts as his muse).

Maybe it will grow on me? Only time will tell...

Defunct Band #1

My Defunct Band section will pay homage to the best bands out there no longer making music for our listening pleasure, and hopefully-if you are unaware of any of these artists- give you a chance to experience some spine tingling beats for the first (and hopefully not last) time.

To kick-start the DB# section I am turning to 5 guys from Washington D.C. who made their way on to the post-hardcore scene in 2001 and continued to titillate our senses for 3 glorious years. Yes, I am of course talking about 'Black Eyes'.

Black Eyes are most recognised for their on-stage set up, which consisted of 2 drummers and 2 bass players at either end of the stage and 1 guitarist who took his position at the centre of the group. Most notably is the entire bands involvement with percussion, and the dual vocals from guitarist Dan McCormick and bass player Hugh McElroy, which are evident throughout the Black Eyes discography.

Black Eyes released their self titled album in 2003 after their 7" release for Some Boys/ Shut Up I Never in 2002. For me this record is still the peak for the band. With songs like 'Deformative' and 'A Pack of Wolves' you really get a feel for the raw, and energetic sound the guys purvey.

The band split up just before their second release in 2004. 'Cough' sees a much fresher sound and the introduction of the saxophone throughout the album, which accompanies the signature dual vocals. Tracks such as 'False Positive' and 'Fathers of Daughters' are stand out tracks on this release.
Here is a set of 3 videos from a live performance the band did at the Happy Birthday Hideout in Brooklyn in 2002. The sound isn't great but it really gives you an insight to what you could expect from a live show. Below is a little snippet from the band recording in the studio!

Did you ever get to see the band live? Love em? Hate em? Comment below and share your experiences with the group!

To Robe, Or Not to Robe

The Bath Robe is making it's debut on the streets this season. I've already seen a couple of people rocking this trend, and I like it! It has to be done right though...

As usual, No. 21 got it spot on with the Fall 2011 show. What do you think? Fashion statement, or fashion faux pas?

Femme Fatale

Britney Spears gets a lot of bad press. Yes, she has had more public meltdowns than she has hair extensions, but let's not forget that it was this 'Princess of Pop' who paved the way for all the other young female artists in the music industry to date.

I am, and will forever remain a true Britney Spears fan. I remember buying '...Baby One More Time' on single at the tender age of 14, and every album consecutively since then. I can safely say that her newest addition to the Spears discography, 'Femme Fatale' is in a league of its own. 'I Wanna Go' is the confirmed third single from the album, after the hot song with equally hot, apocalyptic video for 'Till The World Ends'

I ADORE the spiked leather jacket she wears from the Burberry Prorsum SS11 collection
With her wardrobe up to scratch, the past planted firmly behind her, and a new album release, I think 2011 could be the year for Ms Spears...

...and if this recent spread shot by Alexi Lubomirski for the June/July issue of Harpers Bazaar is anything to go by, I think this could be the comeback to end all comebacks.

Laser Life

Papel Picado (or 'Perforated Paper') is the traditional Mexican Folk Art in which, thin sheets of tissue, or paper are folded and hand cut to create intricate designs. The craft is most commonly used to create banners and decorations for famous holidays and celebration such as Día de los Muertos.

With the invention of the laser cutter, we have seen this craft grow and manifest into something spectacular. People are using this method to transform everyday good's into something special, like these AMAZING cupcake wrappers by Paper Orchid

It's not surprising that fashion designers quickly jumped on board with this trend too, creating elaborate designs using laser cutting

 ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
 MARCHESA
 HOUSE OF HOLLAND
YASMIN KIANFAR
VALENTINO
...But he method is not only used to create the most delicate, intricate designs- who could forget the Victor & Rolf creations for their SS10 RTW Collection!

Here are some great shots, photographed by John Olins, of the dresses modelled by Magdalena Frackowiak from the February 2010 issue of 'Dazed and Confused'

GENIUS!

(ps. It's not an intentional thing for me to name blogs after The Blood Brothers songs, but Hey! If the shoe fits...)
